Referring for Anger Management

For teens and adults whose anger is costing them in relationships, at school, at work or with the law.

Chatman Counseling and Rehabilitation takes anger management referrals for adolescents 13 to 17 and adults 18 and older. Adults are seen in individual sessions; teens may have individual sessions, the youth group or both. Sessions happen in person at the Oklahoma City office or by telehealth for clients located anywhere in Oklahoma. To refer, call (405) 205-6314 or email the office, and remember that any court or agency decides for itself whether it accepts this provider.

Who to Refer

When an Anger Referral Makes Sense

Anger management at the practice is for adolescents and adults whose anger is affecting one or more of these areas:

  • Relationships with family, partners or friends
  • Work, including reactions on the job that put employment at risk
  • School, for adolescents 13 to 17
  • Legal standing, including court, probation or OJA requirements
  • Choices under pressure, for clients ready to take responsibility for how they respond

Adults and Teens Are Seen Differently

Adults referred for anger are seen in individual sessions. They do not join the adult group, which is the Adult Sexual Behavior Treatment Group and serves a different purpose.

Teens can be seen individually, in the youth group or both. The youth group covers anger management alongside impulse control, behavioral challenges, poor decision-making and problematic sexual behavior, and it is always separate from adults.

For anger work, one line of Mr. Omar's sums up the focus: "The choices you make dictate the life you live."

OJA (Office of Juvenile Affairs) approved in Oklahoma for problematic sexual behavior and anger management. Court-approved therapist for problematic sexual offense treatment.

What the Work Covers

  1. Identifying Triggers

Sessions look at the situations and thoughts that set off a client's anger, and the patterns behind their reactions.

  2. Regulation Skills

The work covers emotional regulation and impulse control, including how to slow down before reacting.

  3. Choices Under Pressure

Clients work on decision-making for the moments that have gone wrong before, and they own their part in what happened.

  4. Practical Assignments

Assignments between sessions put new skills into practice, and progress is reviewed as the plan moves forward.

When a Court or Agency Is Involved

For adults under a court order, the court decides which providers it accepts, so confirm before the client begins. If the order or a program sets requirements, tell the office; those requirements factor into the plan, but whether the completed work satisfies them is the court's or program's decision.

For youth referred through the Office of Juvenile Affairs, OJA likewise decides acceptance case by case. Anything the practice shares with a court, officer or caseworker requires the client's signed consent, and the law's limits on confidentiality are explained in writing at the start of services.

Anger Referral Questions

Does the practice offer couples sessions for anger?

No. Couples therapy is not offered. Anger management here is individual counseling, with the youth group as an added option for teens.

How long are anger management sessions?

Individual sessions run 45 to 60 minutes and are often scheduled twice a week, and the youth group also meets for 45 to 60 minutes. The exact schedule is set at the assessment.

What if anger is not the whole story?

The assessment reviews mental health background along with the anger itself and identifies areas of concern. The practice does not provide general therapy for depression or trauma.
