Group or Individual Sessions?

A plan can use one format or both, and the mix comes from what your assessment shows rather than a standard package.

Individual sessions are one-on-one meetings with Mr. Omar, often scheduled twice a week for 45 to 60 minutes. Group sessions also last 45 to 60 minutes and bring together clients in the same age range for guided discussion and skill work. The youth group serves adolescents 13 to 17 and the adult group serves adults 18 and older, and the two never meet together. After the assessment, your plan may include individual sessions, group, or both.

One on One

What Individual Sessions Offer

One-on-one sessions are structured and confidential. You can speak openly about what is going on without being judged, and you are still expected to own your actions. Because the time centers on you alone, it can go into your history, the patterns that keep repeating and the decisions in front of you right now.

Individual work comes with a personalized treatment plan, practical assignments and consistent support. Mr. Omar uses these sessions to help you identify unhealthy behavior patterns and build the skills meant to replace them: coping skills, emotional regulation, impulse control, healthy boundaries and better decision-making.

What Group Sessions Offer

Group sessions follow a set structure. In the Adult Sexual Behavior Treatment Group, members use guided discussions, educational materials and practical exercises to work on harmful sexual behavior patterns, offense cycles, triggers, managing urges, empathy for people harmed and relapse prevention. In the youth group, adolescents work on anger, impulse control, poor decision-making, behavioral challenges and problematic sexual behavior through guided discussion, interactive activities and skill-building.

Group offers something different from individual work: hearing how others describe their patterns, practicing skills in front of peers and answering to a room rather than to one counselor. Adult members are expected to show up consistently, take part, finish assigned work and follow group guidelines, while youth members are expected to attend regularly, participate, show respect and keep the group rules.

Which Format Fits Which Client

Who can join a group depends on age and on what brings you in.

  • For adolescents 13 to 17, the options are individual counseling, the youth group, or a combination.
  • For adults 18 and older working on problematic sexual behavior, the options are individual sessions, the Adult Sexual Behavior Treatment Group, or a combination.
  • Adults whose concern is anger work one-on-one with Mr. Omar rather than joining the adult group.
  • Teens and adults never share a group at any stage of treatment.
  • Anyone carrying a court, probation or program requirement should mention it early, because requirements factor into the plan.

How the Assessment Settles It

  1. Free Consultation

You explain the situation in general terms and ask how group and individual work are used here. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

  2. Assessment

Over 1 to 2 hours, Mr. Omar goes through your personal history, behavioral concerns, mental health background and why you are seeking treatment, then names the areas of concern.

  3. Recommendation

The assessment produces treatment recommendations and an individualized plan that spells out individual sessions, group, or both, along with session frequency.

  4. Review Over Time

Progress is reviewed as sessions continue, and the plan, including its balance of formats, adjusts as your needs change.

Common Questions About Formats

Can I ask for group only, or individual only?

Raise your preference at the consultation or the assessment. The final plan rests on what the assessment shows, your needs and any requirements you carry, so the answer depends on your situation.

My court or program mentioned group. Does that decide it?

Bring the exact wording of the requirement to your assessment so it can factor into the plan. Whether the finished plan satisfies the requirement is a decision for that court or program, not the practice.

Are group sessions shorter than individual ones?

No. Both run 45 to 60 minutes. The number of sessions each week is set at the assessment, and individual sessions are often scheduled twice a week.

Will I stay in the same format the whole time?

Not necessarily. Each progress review can shift the balance between group and individual time if your needs have changed.
